From the street the house is bathed in an eerie green glow. Sounds emanate from the entrance--screams, music, animal noises. As you walk up the green lit path you see the giant bat suspended over the porch and the flaming cauldron. Snakes start to appear entangled and dripping from the railings. The large sign announces "House of Slytherin" and below it "No Muggles." The noise grows loader and then, as you step on the porch, you feel it shaking and vibrating.

A grotesque gargoyle stares down at you from the door with flashing eyes and a snake wrapped around the giant ring through its mouth. Beside the door is the doorbell with the Hogwarts and Sytherin logos above it and the other Hogwarts house logos below.

Pressing the doorbell, you jump as it emits a sudden loud ringing like a fire bell. The door opens slightly, and round face peers out from a man in a black cloak. The man asks "What is the password?" You're at a loss. One friend guesses "Halloween" and another announces "Slytherin!" The man, showing some impatience, asks "what do you say on Halloween?" "Trick-or-treat!" you all shout, and the door begins to open.

Stepping inside you see snakes everywhere in the eerie green light. They drape the banister and hang from the walls and ceiling. Some are small and squirmy and others are thick and coiled. "Come in, welcome to the House of Slytherin" the doorman says. He's hunched over and holds a six foot bamboo staff with a hairy troll's head impaled on the top. "Be careful of the snakes and the bat, they haven't finished feeding." You follow his gesture up to the ceiling where, amongst the many snakes, another large bat hovers over you.

In front of you is a table with a charred small black tree decorated with sparkling glass ornaments. They look almost like Christmas decorations, but they are witches, vampires, ghosts and ghouls. Behind the tree is a banner with the Hogwarts shield and logo. On the center of the table is a large pot with Chinese dragons carved on it, candy inside, and a particularly thick black and green snake. Behind it stands a skull with a glass globe inside of it full of flashing electric sparks.

Behind the table is a six fingered black candelabra and another one is in the back of the hall. To the left is tall table with a giant bubbling caldron draped with more snakes and a large cobra. The cauldron spills green mist over to a smaller electric candelabra with a skull set in the middle. To the right of the tables stands a women with flowing black hair wearing a long green velvet gown trimmed in gold lace. She stands there, silent, surveying you.

"Savros, Savros," cries the doorman in a high pitched voice "we have visitors."

"WHAT . . . DO . . . THEY . . . WANT?!" bellows a deep voice from everywhere.

Silence.

The doorman anxiously whispers to you "Candy, candy, tell him you want candy."

"Candy!" you all shout.

"CANDY!?!" he booms as suddenly he appear from the back of the hall. Over six feet tall he is draped in a green robe and a black cloak with the hood set on his head. His hair and beard are slick black and sparkling. Jewels line his checks and eyebrows. "THEY WANT CANDY!" he exclaims.

His left hand--his index finger armored in metal--reaches down to the lightening skull. As he grasps it all of the electricity concentrates in one stream going to his hand. He looks down his long face and sparkling beard at you. "Well then," he proclaims as he brandishes a two foot bamboo wand towards you "you'll have to tell me what you are dressed as tonight." The wand, with it's green glowing tip, passes in front you as you realized that he is talking not to the group but to you alone.

You don't know what to say. You can see the impatience in his eyes. The sounds of howling dogs and screaming cats fill the room. "Tell him your costume" a friend prods from behind you. You blurt out "a vampire." He looks somewhat pleased. Sneering, he says "A vampire! I like vampires, they're very Slytherin." "And what are you?" he asks the next person in your group. One by one they answer and he replies. "A cheerleader." "How disgustingly wholesome, you must be a Hufflepuff." "Superman." "How heroic, looks like a Gryfindor to me." "A witch." "I like witches, my mother is a witch. Very clever, you must be a Ravenclaw."

"So Selva," he says as he turns to the woman, "do you think they deserve candy?"

"I think so," she purrs as she picks up the dragon bowl. "That is if our friend here," she gently reaches past the snake "will allow it."

One by one she hands you the candy. Savros turns his back to you, holds his wand high and shouts "Be-gone!" as he leaves the room.

The doorman starts to usher you out. "Thank you for visiting. Be careful tonight. He-who-must-not-be-named is still out there. Happy Halloween."

The door shuts behind you with a whoosh and a thud. The sounds and music fill your ears again as you step over the shaking porch. Walking down the green lit path you note to yourself that you'll be back at this house next year.
